Turkey’s central bank has appointed Murat Taşçı as its new chief economist, marking the institution’s first such appointment in six years, according to a report by Bloomberg.

Taşçı had joined the central bank as an adviser last month. He previously worked at the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland and later JPMorgan in New York.

According to Bloomberg this is the first time the central bank has filled the chief economist role since the departure of Hakan Kara in 2019.

Taşçı completed his undergraduate studies in economics at Koç University before earning a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in the same field from the University of Texas at Austin.

He worked at the Cleveland Fed from 2006 to 2023 and left as a senior economist to join JPMorgan, where he served for nearly three years as an executive director and senior US economist.

Taşçı announced his move to the Turkish central bank as an adviser in November on LinkedIn. His post received an early endorsement from central bank governor Fatih Karahan.
