Turkish authorities have detained 27 people as part of an investigation into Monday’s attack on the Salih İşgören Police Station in the Balçova district of İzmir province that killed a high-ranking police inspector and a police officer while wounding two others, officials said.

The shooting suspect, a 16-year-old identified as E.B., was detained after sustaining an injury during his apprehension.

Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya identified the victims as Chief Inspector Muhsin Aydemir and police officer Hasan Akın. Officer Ömer Amilağ was reported to have been seriously injured, while officer Murat Dağlı sustained minor wounds. Officials have not indicated a motive.

İzmir Governor Süleyman Elban said the suspect lived on the same street as the station, was a high school student and had no prior criminal record. He added that the weapon used was a shotgun registered to the suspect’s father and purchased about 10 years ago. Separate reporting described it as a pump-action shotgun.

The İzmir Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office said two deputy chief prosecutors and six prosecutors were assigned to the case and that a publication ban was imposed.

Authorities also detained the suspect’s parents and two friends, along with a 32-year-old Iranian national alleged to have been in contact with the teen, with the overall detention count reaching 27.

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said the suspect’s connections were being investigated.

The Interior Ministry denied social media claims that the suspect had died, saying his treatment was ongoing.

Video circulating in Turkish media appears to show the suspect shouting “Allahu Akbar” while wounded on the ground.
