Turkish prosecutor demands 5-year sentence for Greek soldiers who crossed border

Must read

A Turkish prosecutor on Tuesday demanded a five-year prison sentence for each of two Greek servicemen who had been held in pre-trial detention for months in Turkey after they crossed the border in March 2018 without authorization.

The espionage charges against Lt. Angelos Mitretodis and Sgt. Dimitris Kouklatzis were dropped by the prosecutor last week.

The Edirne Chief Public Prosecutor accuses the Greek soldiers of intentionally entering a military area without permission.

Athens claimed at the time that the two servicemen crossed into Turkey by mistake while following the trail of suspected undocumented migrants.

Mitretodis and Kouklatzis had been held in a high security prison in Edirne for 167 days before their release pending trial in August of last year.
