Former Supreme Court of Appeals judge Oktay Acu on Wednesday was handed down a thirteen-and-a-half-year sentence by a court for his alleged ties to the faith-based Gülen movement, the T24 news website reported.
Acu was dismissed from the bench after a failed coup attempt in 2016, for which the Turkish government blames the movement, although it strongly denies it.
The state-run Anadolu news agency referred to Acu as the judge who approved the appeal of intra-party opposition within the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) to hold a party convention in 2016 to change party management.
Another court subsequently annulled the convention held by the dissidents.
After MHP leader Devlet Bahçeli’s fierce resistance to his opponents in the party, a number of deputies moved to establish the İYİ (Good) Party.
The MHP has been an ally of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) since 2015.
