On the same day that hundreds of women marched in Istanbul to protest violence and animosity due to their clothing, private security guards made two women wearing shorts leave Maçka Park, the Cumhuriyet daily reported on Sunday.
According to a video and the news story, private security guards asked the women to leave Maçka Park in the Şişli district of İstanbul due to their clothing.
“I won’t allow you to stay in the park dressed like this. You can’t display your body like that,” the security guards said to the women and called the police, according to witnesses.
The women are seen wearing shorts in the video.
People in the park reacted angrily to the police and security guards.
In June a man attacked a woman named Melisa Sağlam on a minibus in İstanbul’s Pendik neighborhood because Sağlam was wearing shorts.
Similarly in September, nurse Ayşegül Terzi was attacked on an İstanbul bus for wearing shorts.
On Saturday hundreds of women in İstanbul protested recent attacks on women due to their dress with the slogan “Don’t Mess with My Outfit” and carried denim shorts on hangers as examples of the type of clothing some find unacceptable.
