Turkey detains 119 in operations targeting ISIL

Must read

Turkish security forces detained 119 people in operations across 30 provinces over alleged links to the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), the Interior Ministry announced Saturday.

The detainees are accused of membership in the group, spreading its propaganda on social media and providing financing through affiliated individuals or organizations presented as charities.

The operations were conducted by provincial gendarmerie units in coordination with public prosecutors and the Counterterrorism Department of the Gendarmerie General Command.

Turkish police in late June killed a man suspected of links to ISIL during an exchange of gunfire in southern Ankara, 2 weeks before the capital hosted a NATO summit.

Police later detained 209 people in Ankara over alleged links to ISIL or left-wing militant groups as part of security measures imposed before the summit.
