Turkish authorities detain 70 in ISIL operations across 21 provinces

Turkish authorities have detained 70 people in operations targeting the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) across 21 provinces, the Interior Ministry said Tuesday.

The raids were carried out by provincial gendarmerie units under the coordination of the Gendarmerie General Command’s counterterrorism department and public prosecutors.

The ministry said the suspects were accused of membership in ISIL, financing the group through people and alleged charity organizations linked to it and spreading ISIL propaganda on social media.

Prosecutors have launched investigations into the suspects, the ministry said.

The ministry said security forces would continue operations targeting ISIL’s activities and financial networks.

Turkey has announced a series of ISIL operations in recent months.

The Interior Ministry said in May that police detained 324 suspects in 47 provinces, while a separate operation in April led to the detention of 525 suspects in 56 provinces.
