French-Turkish actor Tchéky Karyo, star of ‘La Femme Nikita’ and ‘The Missing,’ dies at 72

French-Turkish actor Tchéky Karyo, known for his roles in Luc Besson’s “La Femme Nikita” and numerous international productions, died Friday at the age of 72, his family announced.

A statement from his wife and children sent to Agence France-Presse said Karyo “succumbed to cancer this Friday, October 31.”

Born in İstanbul in 1953, Karyo moved to France as a child and became one of the country’s most recognizable character actors, acclaimed for his intense screen presence and versatility.

He began his film career in the 1980s, earning early critical attention for his work in French cinema. He played the hunter in Jean-Jacques Annaud’s 1988 wilderness drama “The Bear” and gained international recognition two years later for his performance as a secret agent in Besson’s “La Femme Nikita” (1990).

Fluent in French, English and Spanish, Karyo went on to appear in major global productions, including Ridley Scott’s “1492: Conquest of Paradise” (1992) and Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s “Amélie” (2001). He also worked with directors such as Walter Salles in the 1995 Brazilian thriller “Foreign Land” and more recently starred in the acclaimed British-French television series “The Missing” and its spin-off “Baptiste.”

Karyo’s long career spanned more than four decades across film, television and theater, earning him admiration both in France and abroad for his ability to embody complex and stoic characters with emotional depth.
