Turkey’s unemployment rate dropped to 8.4 percent in May, a 0.2 percentage point decline from April, the state-run Anadolu news agency reported, citing data released by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat) on Monday.
The number of jobless individuals aged 15 and older fell by 69,000 to 2.97 million. Employment rose by 100,000, bringing the total number of employed persons to 32.52 million. The employment rate edged up slightly to 49 percent.
Unemployment among men was 6.5 percent, while the rate for women stood at 11.9 percent.
The youth unemployment rate, covering ages 15 to 24, declined by 0.3 percentage points to 15.4 percent. Within that group, unemployment was 11 percent for men and 23.5 percent for women.
Broadly defined unemployment, which includes time-related underemployment, potential labor force and the unemployed, dropped by 1.1 percentage points to 31 percent. The rate combining time-related underemployment and unemployment was 20.7 percent, while the combination of unemployment and potential labor force stood at 20.2 percent.
The labor force increased by 31,000 to 35.49 million, with the participation rate steady at 53.5 percent. Participation among men was 70.9 percent, compared to 36.5 percent for women.
The average actual weekly working hours, adjusted for seasonal and calendar effects, rose by 0.6 hours to 42.7 hours in May.
