Turkey says following developments in Washington, DC, with concern

Must read

The Turkish Foreign Ministry has released a statement expressing its concerns about the invasion of the US Capitol by supporters of outgoing President Donald Trump in an attempt to overturn the results of the Nov. 3 election won by Joe Biden.

“Turkey is monitoring worrying developments in the US, including attempts to storm the Capitol building,” the ministry said in a statement. “We believe that the US will overcome this domestic crisis calmly.”

The statement also called on Turkish citizens in the US to avoid crowded places and venues where demonstrations were being held.

Turkish Parliament Speaker Mustafa Şentop said on Twitter: “We follow the events in the USA with concern and invite the parties to calmness. We believe that problems will always be solved within law and democracy. As Turkey, we have always been in favor of the law and democracy and we recommend it to everyone.”

In the meantime Turkey expressing concerns about the developments in the Washington and emphasis on law and democracy led to ridicule and jokes on social media due to Turkey’s own poor record on democracy and rights.

Twitter user Jean Michel Rubillon wrote: “This is like the world is upside down. Turkey asking the US for restraint and calm… Normally it would be the other way.”

“Now we are being trolled by other countries, thanks to the violent, cheap coup attempt of @realDonaldTrump,” wrote another Twitter user named Sarah Reese Jones.

Another Twitter user referred to the fact of Turkey being the top jailer of journalists in the world, tweeting, “Well at least in the US reporters and journalists aren’t rounded up & put into a kangaroo court on false charges simply trying to do their job!”
