Airstrike kills 78 Turkish-backed Syrian militants, Russia denies involvement

A Russian airstrike purportedly targeting a camp nine kilometers from the Turkish border has killed 78 Turkish-backed Syrian militants in the Idlib region while injuring more than 135, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported on Monday.

Militants affiliated with the al-Sham Corps were targeted by what appeared to be Russian air force planes, the war monitor said. Russia promptly denied any involvement in the attack, saying Syrian regime forces were responsible.

The death toll is expected to rise as a large number of the injured are in serious condition, while many others are missing under the rubble, the SOHR report said.

The area hosts camps for displaced people and rebels’ headquarters. Russian-backed jets reportedly continue flying over the area.
