Qatar has weighed in on the Libyan conflict and urged the international community to support the United Nations-recognized Government of National Accord (GNA) based in Tripoli, the Ahval news website reported, citing the Anadolu news agency.
“It has become clear that the only solution to the Libyan crisis is to support the legitimate government,” Anadolu quoted Qatari Foreign Minister Mohammed bin Abdurrahman Al Thani as saying.
Al Thani said it was necessary to implement resolutions on the conflict by the United Nations Security Council, the Berlin peace process conference that took place earlier this year and the 2015 Skhirat agreement, which recognized the GNA as Libya’s government.
“Some countries initially supported this agreement, but then violated it, by supporting opposition groups against the government,” Al Thani said.
Qatar and Turkey support the GNA in its fight against rebel General Khalifa Haftar’s eastern-based Libyan National Army, which is backed by Russia, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates and France, among others.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan travelled to Qatar for a day of meetings last week and met with Qatari Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the Presidential Communications Directorate said in a statement.
The two leaders were to discuss the “relations between the two friendly and brotherly countries” in “all aspects,” according to a previous statement.
Erdoğan left Turkey for the first time since the coronavirus pandemic took hold in the country in March to attend the Doha meetings.
