Germany to donate €25 million to support displaced Syrians in Idlib: report

Germany will donate €25 million ($27.63 million) to Turkey’s Red Crescent in support of the building of shelters for displaced Syrians fleeing Idlib towards the Turkish border due to heavy clashes, the Deutsche Welle Turkish service reported.

A spokesperson from the German Foreign Ministry said Berlin has already provided some €28 million for security and the needs of civilians in northwestern Syria.

Chancellor Angela Merkel had pledged to continue the financial aid during her visit to İstanbul in January.

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan had brought up the issue of building some 10,000 shelters near the Turkish border with the help of the Disaster and Emergency Management Agency (AFAD) and the Turkish Red Crescent.

Erdoğan has repeatedly said that Turkey, currently hosting some 3.6 million Syrian refugees, cannot handle another influx of refugees from Syria.

Officials said up to 700,000 Syrians have been displaced in the Idlib region in the wake of Russian-backed Syrian government attacks on terrorist groups and rebels.
