Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) deputy Leyla Güven, who had been on a hunger strike for nearly 200 days, took the parliamentary oath of office on Wednesday, a year after the start of the new legislative term, the Artı Gerçek news website reported.
Güven was elected as a deputy from the HDP the in the June 2018 general election while she was still in jail.
She went on a hunger strike in November 2018 in protest of the “isolation” of jailed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) leader Abdullah Öcalan, who was prohibited from seeing his lawyers and family.
Three HDP deputies and hundreds of inmates subsequently joined Güven in her hunger strike.
In May, after the Turkish government allowed Öcalan’s lawyers to visit him at his İmralı island prison, the hunger strikes ended.
Güven was released pending trial in January for reasons of health.
