CHP demands to examine request sent to US for extradition of Gülen

Must read

The main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) has demanded the Justice Ministry make available files that were sent to the United States for the requested extradition of US-based cleric Fethullah Gülen, the Hürriyet Daily News reported.

“We appealed to the Justice Ministry on May 25 demanding to examine the documents used in requesting the extradition of Gülen. We stated in our appeal that our committee of four is available to conduct the examination at the Justice Ministry on May 29 or May 30,” CHP deputy group leader Özgür Özel said in a written statement issued on Monday.

The appeal came after CHP presidential candidate Muharrem İnce claimed on May 18 that US officials had contacted him about the extradition of Gülen, the leader of a movement that is accused by the government of orchestrating a 2016 coup attempt, and said the officials informed him that no proper extradition request had been sent to the US regarding Gülen’s extradition.

Responding to İnce’s claims, Deputy Prime Minister Bekir Bozdağ on May 19 said, “I invite Mr. İnce, legal experts and MPs to come to the Justice Ministry and see the documents for themselves.”
