Motion seeking military deployment in Azerbaijan submitted to Turkish Parliament

Must read

Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, president of Turkey and leader of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP), on Monday submitted a motion to the Turkish Parliament that seeks permission for the deployment of Turkish troops in Azerbaijan, the state-run Anadolu news agency reported.

The Turkish peacekeeping troops will be responsible for monitoring a ceasefire agreement between Turkish ally Azerbaijan and Armenia that was reached following six weeks of intense fighting between the two countries.

The motion asks for a one-year mandate to send Turkish troops to Azerbaijan and leaves it to Erdoğan to determine the number of troops to be sent.

Last week, the Russian and Turkish defense ministers signed a memorandum to create a joint monitoring center in Azerbaijan.

The motion is expected to soon be debated in the Turkish Parliament
