İstanbul mayor files criminal complaint against interior minister over investigations targeting him

Must read

İstanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu has filed a criminal complaint against Interior Minister Süleyman Soylu and an inspector from the ministry over an administrative investigation targeting his time as mayor of the Beylikdüzü Municipality, the T24 news website reported.

İmamoğlu accused Soylu and Inspector Arif Yıldırım of misconduct by including falsified information in a report of an administrative investigation.

Last week Turkey’s Interior Ministry authorized 27 administrative investigations into İmamoğlu covering the time he served as mayor of İstanbul’s Beylikdüzü district, between 2014 and 2019, according to the Sözcü daily.

The investigations were authorized following a thorough interior ministry inspection that was green lighted in May 2019, immediately after Turkey’s Supreme Election Board (YSK) ruled for a rerun of the election for mayor of İstanbul.

İmamoğlu had won the race in March 2019 by a tight margin against the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) candidate.

İmamoğlu became İstanbul Metropolitan Municipality mayor in June with a clear win. The Interior Ministry has removed nearly 50 mayors, most of whom are from the Kurdish opposition party, since local elections in March 2019.
