Nuri Başkapan was detained at a notary’s office in İstanbul on allegations of insulting President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan while trying to send him a notarized letter of protest, the Gazete Duvar news website reported on Monday.

“I do not recognize or accept your presidency,” he reportedly wanted to say about Erdoğan’s harsh remarks against the opposition while on the campaign trail.

The notaries then informed him that they could not send the letter to Erdoğan. When Başkapan asked for a written declaration of the refusal, the notaries called the police, according to the report.

Başkapan was taken to a nearby police station where he was questioned. He was released a few hours later upon instructions by the prosecutor’s office.
