Khashoggi commemorated in venue of murder on its 1st anniversary

A commemoration ceremony has been held in front of the Saudi Consulate General in İstanbul inside which journalist Jamal Khashoggi was killed a year ago.  

Khashoggi, a Washington Post columnist who wrote critically about the Saudi crown prince, was murdered inside the Saudi Consulate General in İstanbul on Oct. 2, 2018. His remains still have not been found.

The ceremony began at 13:14 on Wednesday, the exact time when Khashoggi entered the consulate to get papers for his upcoming marriage.

Khashoggi’s Turkish fiancée, Hatice Cengiz, UN Special Rapporteur on Extra-Judicial Executions Agnes Callamard, former Egyptian politician Ayman Nour and president of the Turkish-Arab Media Foundation Turan Kışlakçı delivered speeches at the ceremony to honor Khashoggi and appeal for justice for his murder.

The ceremony was also attended by Jeff Bezos, owner of The Washington Post and Amazon.

After making numerous contradictory statements about Khashoggi’s fate, Riyadh said he had been killed and his body dismembered when negotiations to persuade him to return to Saudi Arabia failed.

The journalist’s  gruesome killing caused outrage around the world.
