Turkey reassigns 6 generals for second time in a month

A presidential decree on Wednesday reassigned two brigadier generals and four major generals in the Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) less than a month after they had received new commanding posts during a Supreme Military Council meeting held on Aug. 1, the Diken news website reported.

One of the officers, Maj. Gen. Erhan Uzun, was tasked with commanding the 6th Mechanized Infantry Division stationed in Idlib, northern Syria, replacing Maj. Gen. Ahmet Ercan Çorbacı, who reportedly resigned last week.

Çorbacı’s resignation drew attention as it came following a Syrian army offensive that resulted in the siege of a Turkish military observation post in the region.

Turkey’s maintains military observation posts in Idlib as part of a deal reached with Russia last year to remove terrorist groups from the area in order to stave off a Russia-backed Syrian army offensive.

Security expert and former TSK member Metin Gürcan claimed the resignations were indicative of internal discord within the army and an implicit resistance against Defense Minister Hulusi Akar.
