Woman who was returned to prison after giving birth released pending trial

Must read

A Turkish court on Wednesday released pending trial Hatice Şahnaz, who on May 27 was put back in pretrial detention due to alleged Gülen movement links a few days after giving birth.

Her baby, Safiye, was among more than 700 children who are accompanying their mothers in jail.

Human rights activist Ömer Faruk Gergerlioğlu announced the development, saying it was “the most beautiful news of the day.”

Relevant laws on the execution of sentences prohibit courts from arresting mothers for six months following birth.

Prison authorities do not allow mothers to bring bottles, blankets, strollers, diapers or clothing for infants with them, saying these items can be procured inside.

The young mother was first detained in September 2018.

She was arrested over her alleged links to the faith-based Gülen movement, which Turkey accuses of orchestrating a failed coup in 2016 and has outlawed as a terrorist group.

The group denies any involvement in the coup or terrorism.
