The US Embassy in Ankara joined Turkey on Friday in slamming China’s mistreatment of Uighur Turks, the state-run Anadolu news agency reported.
“The #USA agrees w/ @MFATurkey’s assessment,” the embassy said on Twitter, sharing a Turkish Foreign Ministry statement that said “It is no longer a secret that more than one million arbitrarily arrested Uighur Turks are subjected to torture & political brainwashing in internment camps and prisons.”
Turkey last week cited reports that Uighur poet and musician Abdurrehim Heyit had died in a detention camp and claimed that detained Uighurs were being subjected to torture in “concentration camps,” calling China’s treatment of Uighurs a “great embarrassment for humanity.”
China in response released a video allegedly showing Heyit alive, asking Turkey to withdraw its “false” claims.
