Turkey’s unemployment rate rose to 11.4 percent in September

Turkish unemployment rose to 11.4 percent in September, the country’s statistics authority said on Monday, the Hürriyet Daily News reported.

“The number of unemployed persons aged 15 and over increased by 330,000 to 3.749 million in the September 2018 period,” the Turkish Statistics Institute (TurkStat) said.

“The unemployment rate was 11.4 percent with a 0.8 percentage point increase. In the same period, the non-agricultural unemployment rate was 13.5 percent with a 0.7 percentage point increase. While youth unemployment, persons aged 15-24, was 21.6 percent with a 1.6 percentage point increase, the unemployment rate for persons aged 15-64 was 11.7 percent with a 0.9 percentage point increase,” it added.

The employment rate in September was at 47.8 percent and labor force participation was 54 percent with a 0.4 percent increase, according to the statement.

Meanwhile, Turkish automotive production fell 21 percent in November year-on-year to 128,875 vehicles and declined 8 percent in the first 11 months of the year to 1.43 million, Turkey’s Automotive Manufacturers’ Association said, Reuters reported.

The data, released over the weekend, showed exports in November dipped 1 percent over the same period last year to 119,851 vehicles and were flat year-on-year in the first 11 months at 1.22 million vehicles.

Export revenues rose 4 percent year-on-year in November to $2.8 billion and were up 12 percent in the 11-month period at $29.7 billion.
