A foundation established by Serhat Albayrak, the brother of Energy Minister Berat Albayrak, who is also the son-in-law of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, has been granted tax-exempt status by the Turkish Cabinet, the Birgün daily reported on Friday.

Serhat Albayrak’s Nun Education and Culture Foundation has been added to the list of foundations that enjoy tax exemptions allowed by a Cabinet decision dated May 10, 2018.

Albayrak established the Nun foundation along with Ömer Faruk Kalyoncu, the owner of Kalyon Construction, in order to “contribute to high-quality education services.”

The foundation was established in İstanbul in 2014. The foundation’s assets are estimated at TL 150,000.

The Nun foundation first came to public attention due to its construction of a school in a second degree protected zone in a forest in İstanbul’s Beykoz district.

The school was constructed thanks to special permission from the Environment Ministry although the İstanbul Municipality objected to its construction in a bid to protect the forested area.
