On March 8, International Women’s Day, Turkish prosecutors launched an investigation into controversial cleric Nurettin Yıldız on the grounds that he promotes violence against women.
Yıldız, the president of the Social Fabric Foundation (Sosyal Doku Vakfı), frequently comes to Turkey’s agenda with his controversial statements. In his sermons he argues that marrying a 6-year-old girl is legitimate. In addition to this remark, which sparked outrage among the public, Yıldız also says it is a sin to watch a woman news anchor on TV and that women should be grateful to be beaten.
The Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office has launched the investigation into Yıldız on allegations of promoting hatred and enmity among the public.
