More than 1.2 million Turkish citizens who live abroad cast votes in a referendum to be held in Turkey on April 16, according to a statement from Customs and Trade Minister Bülent Tüfekçi on Monday.

Tüfekçi said a total of 1,241,837 Turkish expatriates cast votes for the April 16 referendum.

Voting ended on April 9 for Turks living in 57 countries outside Turkey, but voting will continue at customs gates until April 16.

Turkey’s relations with various European countries have recently become strained due to the cancellation of rallies planned to be held by Turkish ministers in order to seek the support of Turkish expatriates for the referendum.

The minister said the crisis over the cancellation of the ministers’ rallies led to a higher voter turnout abroad.
