Nine colonels of the Turkish military serving in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (KKTC) were detained on Sunday over charges of coup involvement as part of a currently ongoing purge in Turkey.

The officer, who are accused of having links to the Gülen movement, are being brought to Ankara from Cyprus.

The government accuses the Gülen movement of masterminding a coup attempt on July 15 and has been undertaking a massive purge in the military, police, judiciary and other government institutions.

On Jan. 10, Labor Minister Mehmet Müezzinoğlu announced that more than 135,000 people have been purged from state bodies due to their alleged links to the faith-based Gülen movement since the failed coup attempt on July 15.
