The Rize Governor’s Office has prohibited locals who oppose a controversial project known as the Green Road from going to the highland areas of the province.
The Green Road project foresees the construction of a 2,600-kilometer road connecting highland areas in eight provinces of Turkey’s Black Sea region.
A group of people protesting the resumption of construction of the Green Road after a 15-month hiatus on Monday were blocked by gendarmerie teams when they attempted to access highland areas.
Eleven people were briefly detained for preventing the operation of heavy equipment.
The protests prompted the Rize Governor’s Office to ban opponents of the Green Road project from entering highland areas. The ban went into effect on Tuesday morning.
