Leader of Turkey’s main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu has said he was warned by the Interior Ministry about a possible assassination attempt against him following a failed military coup on July 15.

A member of the Turkish security forces was killed when militants of the terrorist Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) attacked Kılıçdaroğlu’s convoy in Artvin province on Thursday.

The incident took place near the district of Andanuç when Kılıçdaroğlu was on his way to Artvin from Şavşat.

Speaking to CNN Türk television on Saturday evening, the CHP leader said: “They warned me about an assassination threat following July 15. They called me from the Interior Ministry. The number of my security guards was increased. … The intelligence that came to me following the Yenikapı rally told me to keep the lights of the room I always use on, to go and sit in another room but to keep the lights off.”

A huge rally protesting the coup attempt was held in Istanbul’s Yenikapı district on Aug. 7 that was participated in by millions of people including Kılıçdaroğlu.

The CHP leader also said he had received no warning about the potential danger of the road where the attack took place.
