Syrian journalist shot by ISIL in Gaziantep passes away

A Syrian journalist who was allegedly shot by members of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) in the Turkish border province of Gaziantep over the weekend has died from his wounds.

Mohammad Zahar Alshurgat, who was reportedly receiving death threats for his anti-ISIL work, was critically injured after he was shot in his neck on Sunday. The 36-year-old journalist died from his wounds at the hospital he had been receiving treatment on Tuesday.

Also in December, activist and journalist Naji al-Jerf was assassinated in the southeastern city of Gaziantep. Jerf, who recently shot a documentary covering atrocities committed by ISIL was killed after he received threats in relation to the documentary.

Jerf was reportedly preparing to go to France after receiving threats from ISIL members and the recent murder of two other journalists in southeast Turkey.
