Turkey cancels relegations in football leagues for this season

Must read

No Turkish football teams will be relegated this season, and the Turkish Super League will be played with 21 teams in the next season, Turkish Football Federation Chairman Nihat Özdemir announced on Wednesday.

The highest football league in Turkey is normally played with 18 teams, but three more teams that won the lower league will join for the next season, according to the Diken news website.

Four teams will be relegated in the next season, and the prime league’s number of contenders will remain 20 afterwards, Özdemir added.

Kayserispor, Ankaragücü and Malatyaspor had finished the top league in the relegation zone.

Özdemir also announced that a new regulation for foreign players in Turkish clubs would be enforced in the 2021-2022 season.

Right now Turkish clubs can have 14 foreign players in a seasonal squad of 28, while 12 of the foreigners can be named in the match squads.

The new regulation will limit the number of foreigners in the match squads to eight.
