Turkey’s RTÜK signals censorship on ice cream ads, citing ‘immorality’

Murat Ellialtı, an executive at Turkey’s Radio and Television Supreme Council (RTÜK), said some ice cream ads exceed the “limits of public morality,” hinting at new regulations to curb them, the pro-government Hürriyet newspaper reported on Monday.

“There are problems with the ads related to fizzy drinks and ice cream, which in particular can go beyond general limits of morality,” Ellialtı told a parliamentary sub-commission on obesity. “We are trying to resolve the issue by adopting new regulations.”

He confirmed that RTÜK has previously fined advertisers on moral grounds.

“The imposition of a fine doesn’t do much good after the ad is broadcast. That’s why we will try to talk to them before the ads begin in April and May,” he added.
