Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on Thursday denied reports that his ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) lost around 800,000 members over the past year, claiming the drop was only 290,000, the Diken news website reported.

Erdoğan added that more than 95 percent of the loss was caused by members who passed away.

On Wednesday the T24 news website reported that some 800,000 AKP members had parted ways with the party within the last year, dropping membership from 10,719,000 to 9,931,103.
