Turkey detains 112 people in one day over Gülen links

Turkish police on Wednesday detained 112 people as part of investigations into the faith-based Gülen movement, the Diken news website reported.

The İzmir Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office issued detention warrants for 30 people in an investigation into the Turkish military over Gülen links.

Three of the suspects are dismissed military cadets, two are retired personnel and 25 are active duty servicemen.

The police raided houses in eight provinces and detained 21 people.

Also in İzmir, as part of an another investigation, 41 people, including doctors, university students and teachers, were detained by the police.

They were accused of reviving the Gülen movement’s activities in the city.

The Van Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office also issued detention warrants for 19 people, including 14 military personnel, over Gülen links.

Police detained the 19 suspects in 17 provinces and in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (KKTC).

The Konya Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office issued detention warrants for 23 military members as part of an investigation into the Gülen movement.

The police detained 15 of the active duty soldiers being sought.

Meanwhile the İstanbul police on Wednesday detained 16 people over Gülen links. Reports said 18 people were also being sought by the İstanbul prosecutor’s office.

The Turkish government believes the Gülen movement orchestrated a failed coup in 2016, although the movement strongly denies it.

Some 140,000 public servants have been dismissed since the abortive putsch due to alleged Gülen links, and more than 600,000 people have been investigated on allegations of terrorism.
