Germany’s Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) has rejected the asylum applications of 5,040 Turkish citizens out of 8,547 applications made by Turkish nationals.

According to a news story on Tuesday in Der Tagesspiegel, as reported by CNN Türk, the BAMF reviewed 8,547 applications from Turkish citizens and rejected 5,040 of them.

The report said the BAMF did not reveal the reasons for rejection and said each application is handled on its own merits.

German Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere recently said 615 Turkish civil servants have sought political asylum in Germany since a failed coup attempt in Turkey on July 15, 2016.

Die Welt reported in August that more than 6,700 Turkish citizens have applied for asylum in Germany since the coup attempt in Turkey.

According to data from the BAMF, a total of 3,206 Turkish nationals applied for asylum in Germany in the first six months of 2017.
