Turkish PM says Turkey will be divided if presidential system not adopted

Must read

Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım said on Sunday that there is a need to switch to presidential system in Turkey and there is a risk of country’s division if the system is not adopted.

Speaking to his party men in a meeting in İstanbul on Sunday, Yıldırım said “Some say that Turkey will be divided if the parliamentary system is replaced by presidential system. In fact, Turkey faces risk of division if it does not switch to presidential system.”

He also claimed that adoption of a presidential system will end the era of weak governments in Turkey and help country to reach its 2023 targets.

He said Turkey’s presidential model would be based on the principle of “one nation, one country, one flag, and one state.”

Last week, Yıldırım said a committee within the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) had completed work on a draft bill that also includes items for a presidential system.

As AKP lacks the votes to pass the bill in parliament single-handedly, he asked the opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) and Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) to support efforts for a new constitution including the presidential system.

Yıldırım stated that the bill would be submitted to parliament “very soon.”
