HDP files complaint over Internet cuts in Kurdish areas

The Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) on Saturday filed a complaint against Internet service providers and government institutions for massive Internet cuts in Turkey’s predominantly Kurdish southeast region following the detention of the co-mayors of Diyarbakır.

The entire region has been suffering from a lack of Internet connectivity since Oct. 26 in order to prevent people from communicating and gathering to protest the detentions, according to the HDP.

Meanwhile, amid increasing pressure on the Kurdish political movement, a court on Saturday issued an overseas travel ban for the HDP’s co-chair Figen Yüksekdağ on the grounds that she presents a flight risk. Yüksekdağ is being tried for positive statements about the Syrian Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) and the Democratic Union Party (PYD).

Mehmet Emin Aktar, a lawyer for detained Co-mayor Gülten Kışanak, wrote on Twitter on Saturday that after four days in detention, she had access to her lawyers and the she is doing well.
