Judicial board suspends prosecutor who passed away in May

Must read

A Balıkesir prosecutor who died back in May was suspended from his job in a government decree issued under post-coup emergency rule on Aug. 31.

Ahmet Biçer was among hundreds of prosecutors who were suspended over alleged links to the Gülen movement, which the government accuses of orchestrating a July 15 coup attempt.

In a parliamentary question to Justice Ministry Bekir Bozdağ, main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) deputy Uğur Bayraktutan said: “The name of Bandırma prosecutor Ahmet Biçer was among those suspended in the government decree dated Aug.31, 2016 even though he passed away in May 2016.”

Bayraktutan further asked: “Are the allegationsthat the lists for suspensions were prepared months ago and put into force only now true?”

In light of massive dismissals following the coup attempt, Johannes Hahn, the EU commissioner overseeing Turkey’s membership bid, said on July 18 that the swift rounding up of Turkish judicial members indicated that the government had prepared a list beforehand. (TurkeyPurge)
