Another Turkish baklava maker detained on coup charges

Must read

Serdar Seyidoğlu, the general manager of the Seyidoğlu Baklava chain, was detained over his alleged links to the Gülen movement, which the government accuses of masterminding a July 15 coup attempt.

Detention warrants were issued for 87 individuals early on Sept. 30, among which was Seyidoğlu.

The government earlier arrested the company’s chairman, Mustafa Seyidoğlu, on the same grounds.

Seyidoğlu’s detention came days after Turkish police took into custody Veli Karahan, the owner of the well-established Tatlıcı Köse pastry shop in Adana.

Karahan’s detention was widely ridiculed on social media since it merely added to the already large number of desert makers in custody.

Faruk Güllü, one of the brothers who run the famous baklava chain Güllüoğlu, is currently under arrest over his alleged links to the Gülen movement.

Critics have lambasted the government for wielding the broad powers it has gained under post-coup emergency rule. Plumbers, teachers, drivers, journalists, comedians, small business owners, court personnel, university students, construction workers and postmen are among the thousands of ordinary citizens who have been either arrested or detained over ties to the movement.
