Magnitude 5.5 earthquake hits northeastern Turkey

Map from the US Geological Survey shows the location of a magnitude 5.5 earthquake near Erbaa in Turkey’s Tokat province on March 13, 2026.

A magnitude 5.5 earthquake struck northeastern Turkey early Friday, according to the country’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD), prompting school closures in the affected province.

The quake hit at around 3:35 a.m. local time in Tokat, AFAD said. There were no immediate reports of deaths, injuries or serious damage.

Authorities said they were continuing to assess the impact.

Tokat Governor Abdullah Köklü announced that schools across the province would remain closed on Friday as a precaution.

Turkey sits on several major fault lines and is prone to frequent earthquakes.

In February 2023 two powerful earthquakes struck southern Turkey and northern Syria, killing more than 53,000 people in Turkey alone and causing widespread destruction across 11 provinces. Among the hardest-hit areas was Hatay province, home to Antakya, the historic city once known as Antioch.
