Turkey launches operation targeting Gain Medya streaming platform, detains 3

Three people have been detained in an İstanbul operation targeting Gain Medya, a Turkey-based streaming platform, over allegations including illegal betting and forming a criminal organization, according to a Tuesday statement from the İstanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office.

The operation was carried out as part of an investigation into Anahat Holding, the parent company of Gain Medya, on accusations of establishing a criminal organization, illegal betting and money laundering, the statement said.

Teams from the İstanbul Provincial Gendarmerie Command conducted raids on Gain Medya and its affiliated companies on Tuesday morning.

Movable and immovable assets believed to have been obtained through criminal activity were seized, and the Savings Deposit Insurance Fund (TMSF) was appointed as trustee over seven companies affiliated with the holding.

Founded in July 2020, Gain Medya rose to prominence with its original productions and had 3.3 million subscribers as of November, according to the company.

The detainees include company executives Berkin Kaya, Barbaros Reşat Gülcan and Selahattin Aydın, according to Turkish media reports.

In its statement the prosecutor’s office said an examination of Kaya’s bank accounts revealed “numerous high-value cash deposits and withdrawals” as well as large sums transferred to companies abroad.

Prosecutors said the companies in which Kaya was a partner lacked sufficient capital structure or commercial activity to explain transfers of that scale.

Kaya acquired a 50 percent stake in the company in June 2024, according to the statement.

Prosecutors also said Anahat Medya AŞ, founded by Aydın, took over Gain Medya in January 2025. In the following seven months Anahat allegedly transferred more than 1 billion Turkish lira to Gain Medya, which prosecutors said was financed through large amounts of cash deposited into Aydın’s personal accounts.

Prosecutors said an overall review of the financial activity revealed a coordinated structure aimed at concealing illegal funds.

Journalist Cüneyt Özdemir, who has recently produced content for the Gain platform,  commented on the operation on his YouTube channel. Özdemir had previously announced that he shut down Suppi, his digital content platform, as part of a cooperation agreement with Gain.

Özdemir said the platform where he and his team produced 38 documentaries had been the subject of a police operation.

“One morning we woke up and saw that Gain had changed hands. Nobody told us anything,” he said.

Sponsorships with major sports clubs

Gain Medya has recently signed sponsorship deals with several major football and basketball teams in Turkey. The company is the shorts sponsor of Fenerbahçe’s men’s football team and the name and jersey sponsor of Galatasaray’s women’s football team.

Gain also has a sponsorship agreement with Beşiktaş for its women’s football team and a one-year naming and jersey sponsorship deal with Beşiktaş’s men’s basketball team.
