A man who entered the İstanbul headquarters of sports broadcaster beIN Sports on Monday carrying what turned out to be a toy gun was detained by police after demanding to speak with television commentator Güntekin Onay, the DHA news agency reported.
The man, identified as Kemal S., 42, reportedly accused Onay of insulting his wife, who works as a security guard at the network’s Ayazağa office. According to media reports, he entered the building around midday, sat down at a table and held the gun to his head while making demands before being persuaded by police to surrender.
Special operations officers and medical teams were dispatched to the scene. No injuries were reported.
Police later determined that the weapon was a toy gun, and Kemal S. was taken into custody for questioning.
Media reports said the confrontation stemmed from an incident the previous night, when Onay allegedly insulted the guard after a food delivery was returned to the sender. The commentator was said to have asked, “Why do you employ people like this?” after being told that the security officer did not recognize his name.
The 54-year-old Onay, one of Turkey’s most experienced and trusted sports broadcasters, has been a prominent figure in Turkish football media since the 1990s. He began his career in 1992 and has since worked for leading networks including Kanal D, Show TV, Star TV and NTV. He joined beIN Sports in 2017, where he continues as a presenter and commentator known for his insightful analysis.
beIN Sports is a Qatari multinational network of sports channels owned and operated by the media group beIN. It is the dominant television sports channel in the MENA region.
Meanwhile, beIN Sports confirmed the incident in a statement on its official social media accounts, saying that the incident was quickly handled by police and its security team and that all employees were safe. “The situation was brought under control quickly, and no one was injured,” the company said.
