Turkey will start printing new identity cards, passports and driver’s licenses for Syrian citizens as part of efforts of the new government in Damascus to reconstruct the country following the fall of Bashar al-Assad, the pro-government Sabah newspaper reported on Friday.
Turkish institutions are working to meet the requests of the new administration in Syria, which include the printing of official documents, Sabah said.
Turkey plans to revoke the temporary protection status of Syrians and treat them like other foreign nationals, according to the report.
Passports and visas will be required to enter Turkey, although the visa process will be simplified for Syrians. Those who decide to stay in Turkey will have to apply for a residence permit under the new regulations.
Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya recently said more than 25,000 Syrian nationals returned home between December 9 and December 23, a record number compared to previous months.
Turkey has taken in more than 3 million Syrian refugees since the beginning of the Syrian civil war in 2011 and built shelters for displaced people in northern Syria. President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan announced plans to build more houses to support voluntary return.
