At least 136 people have been killed, including 20 civilians, in 15 days of intense clashes between the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and factions supported by Turkey following the fall of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported on Friday.
The conflict, centered around strategic locations like the Qaraqozak Bridge and the Tishrin Dam, has included the use of heavy weaponry and Turkish drone support. Both sides claim advances.
SOHR reports that 20 civilians, including a journalist of Turkish origin and two children, have died in the crossfire, alongside 81 faction members supported by Turkey and 35 SDF personnel. Despite claims of territorial gains from both sides, the situation remains highly volatile, with Turkey issuing threats of further escalation.
Tensions are particularly high in the strategic areas surrounding Ain Al-Arab (Kobani), where forces backed by Turkey have reportedly conducted significant military build-ups. Recent battles have included an attempt by factions backed by Turkey to seize Tishrin Dam, which was repelled by the SDF.
US forces have set up a temporary base to mediate and de-escalate tensions in northern and eastern Syria.
