The world has lost another vital voice for peace — the death of Turkish-Islamic scholar Fethullah Gülen is a profound loss for humanity. Good individuals enhance social solidarity, demonstrating that empathy and understanding are essential for a thriving society. Those who offer support without discrimination become beacons of hope in challenging times, yearning for a climate of renewal and harmony.
Positive actions foster an environment where people feel safe and happy. Those who advocate for justice, equality and love are not just significant as individuals; they are the very foundation of society. Recognizing this truth, Gülen dedicated his life to cultivating a world filled with good people, envisioning a perpetual spring.
In reflecting on Gülen’s death, I chose to highlight Tushar Gandhi’s heartfelt condolence message: “Gülen passed away in exile, far from the country he loved; may he rest in peace. Another voice of peace muted; a great loss for humanity!” Following his passing, messages of condolence poured in from around the globe. Ali Cuma, former mufti of Egypt, described him as “a wise man, a mystic, a thinker” who cherished dialogue and tolerance.
Gülen’s death is a significant loss for his followers, for Turkey, for Muslims and indeed for all of humanity. He devoted his life to education, peace and dialogue, much like Gandhi, demonstrating an unwavering commitment to world peace. Despite facing torment and slander, he spent his 83 years building bridges rather than walls, exemplifying the importance of interfaith and intercultural dialogue.
As a peaceful thinker, Gülen championed dialogue and sought to nurture life in all its forms. He led a life of humility and simplicity, remaining unmarried and devoid of personal wealth. His income came from his retirement as an imam and royalties from his writings. After the regime of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan confiscated his pension, he relied solely on the royalties from his works, demonstrating his commitment to his principles.
Even while overseeing a vast network of schools and institutions, Gülen maintained an unblemished record of integrity. He was not involved in any corruption or unethical behavior, and the issues of harassment and violence that have plagued Turkey did not manifest within the institutions of the Gülen or Hizmet (Service) movement, inspired by his views and teachings. His leadership in education, health and various other fields set a commendable example for his followers and the broader Turkish community.
Over the last 40 years Gülen’s revolutionary investments in education offered Turkey and the world a fresh perspective. He nurtured quality human resources, contributing to both his movement and society at large. While some of this talent has been suppressed by the Erdoğan regime, many continue to thrive in countries like the United States and throughout Europe, generating both material and spiritual value.
Looking to the future, it’s essential to consider the contributions of the individuals nurtured by Gülen’s teachings to the Hizmet movement and to humanity as a whole. His dream of a sustainable world filled with good people, peace, dialogue, love, integrity and trust does not end with his death. The institutions he established and the teachings he left behind will continue to inspire future generations.
Gülen cultivated successors who embrace his legacy and strive to realize his vision. Today, there are dedicated teachers, academics, doctors, scientists, businesspeople and artists across the globe who carry forward his ideals. This quality of human resource will persist in promoting peace and love.
It is natural for movements to evolve and transform after the loss of a leader, often leading to new formations or political groups. However, those who prioritize life over mere existence, humility over ego and meaningful purpose over material pursuits will remain steadfast against divisive forces. They will not succumb to the schemes aimed at undermining this community.
The Gülen movement, recognized for its education, sincerity and charitable efforts, will continue its journey with determination and integrity, navigating the challenges it faces with resilience.
In closing, as Gandhi expressed, while Gülen’s passing is a significant loss for humanity, the seeds he planted with compassion and patience will yield enduring benefits for us all.
May he be blessed, and may his soul rest in peace.
