Turkey’s unemployment rate rises to 9.1 percent in January: TurkStat

Turkey’s unemployment rate rose 0.2 percentage points month-on-month to 9.1 percent in January, data from the Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat) showed on Monday.

The number of unemployed aged 15 and above increased by 85,000 compared to December, reaching 3,214,000 in January, TurkStat data showed.

The unemployment rate was 7.7 percent among men and 11.7 percent among women.

Unemployment among the country’s youth aged 15-24 increased by 1.1 percent compared to a month earlier, reaching 16.6 percent in January. The unemployment rate among men in this age group was 14.1 percent, while it was 21.1 percent among women.

The TurkStat data also showed the labor force participation rate in January rose to 53.9 percent from 53.6 percent a month earlier, while the seasonally adjusted measure of labor underutilization rose to 26.5 percent from 24.8 percent the previous month.

Turkey’s unemployment rate fell to 8.5 percent in October, its lowest level in a decade.
