Egyptian foreign minister to visit Turkey for bilateral talks

Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry is scheduled to make an official visit to Turkey on Thursday, the Turkish Foreign Ministry has announced.

Shoukry was invited by his Turkish counterpart, Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu, and they will hold discussions during the visit on bilateral relations and regional developments, according to the ministry statement.

Çavuşoğlu and Shoukry held a meeting last month in the Egyptian capital of Cairo, where they discussed bilateral relations and regional and international matters and agreed to strengthen diplomatic ties. This visit by Çavuşoğlu was the first by a Turkish foreign minister to Egypt in 11 years.

Diplomatic relations between Turkey and Egypt have been limited to chargés d’affaires on both sides since the 2013 military coup that toppled former President Mohamed Morsi of Egypt.

Beginning in 2021 senior foreign ministry officials from Turkey started consultations to ease tensions with Egypt. At the time, Ankara requested that Egyptian opposition TV channels operating in Turkey tone down their criticism of Egypt.

Despite ongoing disagreements over Libya and maritime borders in the gas-rich eastern Mediterranean, Egypt announced in February that Turkish companies had committed to $500 million in new investments.
