Turkey has successfully tested its own long-range air defense system, known as SİPER, according to İsmail Demir, the country’s defense industry director.

Demir tweeted that the missile hit its target from a range of more than 100 kilometers (62 miles) and called it a “New Year’s gift to the nation from our defense industry as we enter the Turkish Century.”

The SİPER project is led by Turkish defense giants ASELSAN and Roketsan as well as the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK).

SİPER is expected to be turned over to the Turkish armed forces in 2023, with plans to form the basis of Turkey’s national air defense system by 2026. The country has also developed the Korkut, Sungur and Hisar air defense systems.
