Turkey summons German ambassador over FDP politician calling Erdoğan a ‘sewer rat’

German Ambassador to Turkey Jürgen Schulz has been summoned by the Turkish Foreign Ministry due to the remarks of a politician from German coalition partner the Free Democrats (FDP) who called Turkey’s president a “sewer rat,” the ministry announced on Tuesday.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Tanju Bilgiç said the ministry condemns in the strongest terms the remarks by Wolfgang Kubicki at a recent FDP election campaign event in Hildesheim, Lower Saxony.

Kubicki is vice chairman of the FDP and also vice president of the German Parliament.

Kubicki, who warned of a new wave of refugees in Europe, said Germany should not “simply open its arms again” as it did during the refugee crisis in 2015 and 2016. He said he knows who was behind the refugee wave back then.

“Erdoğan, the sewer rat,” said Kubick.

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan is frequently accused by European politicians as well as his opponents in Turkey of exploiting the refugee crisis, caused mostly by the civil war in Syria, and trying to wring concessions from Europe in return for not allowing refugees make their way there.

Bilgiç said the foreign ministry expressed its outrage over the remarks of the German politician to the German ambassador.

He said Kubicki lacks the political decency and responsibility to serve as vice president of the German parliament.
