Turkey announced 924 new coronavirus cases on Sunday, bringing the total number to 219,641, while 16 more people have died of the disease, according to a chart posted on Twitter by Health Minister Fahrettin Koca.

According to the chart the death toll has reached 5,491 with the latest additions.

For six days in a row the number of daily coronavirus cases has remained below 1,000, the ministry data indicated.

There are 1,246 patients in intensive care, 398 of whom are on ventilators.

The chart indicated that 997 patients have recovered in the last 24 hours.

“Every day close to 1,000 of our patients recover, while we have around 1,000 new cases daily. When we manage to stop the new cases, the number of active cases will rapidly drop. Our aim is to record an increase in the number of recovered patients and a decrease in the number of new cases. Good news depends on the [anti-corona] measures we take,” tweeted the minister.

Turkey conducted 41,310 tests for the coronavirus over the past day, bringing the overall number of tests carried out so far to 4,273,377.

The chart showed that 202,010 people have recovered in Turkey since the start of the outbreak. Turkey reported its first COVID-19 case on March 11.

The country eased preventative measures at the start of June, opening shopping malls, cafes, restaurants and mosques.
